Abstract
The vivacious Kate Croy seems to face a stark choice; to marry Merton Densher, the impoverished journalist she loves, and thereby break with her family, or to marry lovelessly but well and take up her rightful place in the society. Kate Croy is already romantically involved with promising journalist Merton when they become acquainted with Milly Theale, a New York socialite of immense wealth. Despite that fabulous wealth, Milly Theale is as alone in the world as a fairytale princess. Learning of Milly’s mortal illness and passionate attraction to Densher, Kate sets the scene for a romantic betrayal intended to secure her lasting financial security. Taking in the drawing rooms of London and the opulence of Venice, this is one of Henry James’ most dramatic and poignant commentaries on society and women’s place within it.
